Two spaces count as one, and spaces at the end of a line are ignored. Line breaks still count.

"Pune" and "pune" count as the same word.

Commas, full stops, the danda (।) and other marks are left out of the comparison.

Long unchanged parts are folded, with a few words or lines kept around each change.

Runs in your browser. Your texts are not uploaded, and no AI is used.

Paste two versions to compare

Removed words are struck through in red and added words are underlined in green. The result updates as you type. Or press Try an example.

About the Text Compare Tool

Paste the first and the second version of an article, a page, a caption or a clause, and see what changed: removed words struck through in red and added words underlined in green, side by side or in one column. Compare word by word, line by line or letter by letter, ignore capital letters, extra spaces or punctuation, and copy the marked-up result as HTML or download it. Hindi works too: words and letters are read the way you see them, so a vowel sign stays with its letter. It runs in your browser: no AI, and your text is not uploaded.

How it works

  1. 01

Paste the older version in Original text and the newer one in Changed text, or press Try an example to compare two drafts of a notice for a gym in Pune.

  2. 02

Choose word by word, line by line or letter by letter, side by side or one column, and tick what to ignore. Press Next change to jump from one difference to the next.

  3. 03

Copy the result as HTML for an email or a report, download it as an .html file, or copy it as plain text with [- -] and {+ +} marks.

How the comparison works

The tool splits both versions into words, lines or letters and finds the smallest set of removals and additions that turns the first version into the second, so nothing is marked that did not need to change. Words are runs of letters, vowel signs and digits in any script, so a Hindi word is never cut in the middle, and letters are grapheme clusters as Unicode defines them, so a Devanagari letter stays with its vowel signs. Line by line mode pairs each changed line with its new version and marks the words that changed inside it.

When writers use it

To see what an editor or a client changed in a draft, to check that only the agreed lines changed before a page goes live, to compare an old and a new version of terms and conditions or a price list, or to see how much of a draft was rewritten. The similarity figure, the share of words that did not change, is our measure; it is not a plagiarism score.

What this tool cannot do

It compares plain text only: bold, links, headings and images are not compared, so paste the text, or the HTML code if you want to compare tags. It does not follow text that was moved: a paragraph moved to a new place shows as removed in one place and added in the other. Very different long texts are matched more roughly, and the page says when that happens. It does not check spelling, grammar or facts, and it does not search the web for copies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compare two Word files or Google Docs?

Yes, by pasting. Copy the text of each version and paste it into the two boxes. The tool compares the words, not the formatting, so bold, colours and links do not count as changes.

Does it work with Hindi and Hinglish?

Yes. Words in Devanagari, in English letters or a mix of both are compared as whole words, and the danda (।) is read as punctuation. In letter by letter mode, each letter is a grapheme cluster, so a letter and its vowel sign, such as रे, are compared together and never split.

What do the ignore options do?

Ignore extra spaces treats two spaces as one and skips spaces at the end of a line; line breaks still count. Ignore capital letters treats Pune and pune as the same word. Ignore punctuation leaves commas, full stops and other marks out of the comparison. In the one-column view, text that matches only because of an ignore option is shown as it is in the changed version.

What does the similarity figure mean?

It is our measure: the words that did not change, counted in both versions, as a share of all the words in both. Two identical texts score 100% and two texts with no word in common score 0%. Line by line mode counts unchanged lines instead. It is not a plagiarism or AI score.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

Nothing is uploaded. Both texts and your settings are saved only in this browser, so they are there when you come back; press Clear to remove them. The tool does not use AI.
