About the Kruti Dev to Unicode Converter

Paste Hindi typed with the Kruti Dev 010 font, which turns into English letters once it leaves that font (भारत is stored as Hkkjr), and get it in Unicode Devanagari that works on phones, websites, WhatsApp and in search boxes. Or paste Unicode Hindi and get the Kruti Dev keys for an old file. The tool moves the short i matra and the reph to where Unicode keeps them, joins half letters, and lists words that look wrong so you can check them. It runs in your browser with our key table: no AI, and your text is not uploaded.

Why Kruti Dev text breaks

Kruti Dev is an older Hindi font that draws Hindi shapes on the keys of an English keyboard. The file stores English letters and symbols, and only the font makes them look like Hindi, so on a phone, a website, in an email or in a search box the text shows as letters such as "Hkkjr". Unicode stores the Hindi letters themselves. The Department of Official Language asks central government offices to have Unicode on all their computers and to use only Unicode fonts and the Inscript keyboard for Hindi, and has written that non-Unicode fonts cause problems when files are exchanged.

What the converter fixes

Kruti Dev and Unicode keep some letters in a different order. The short i matra, as in कि, is typed before its letter in Kruti Dev (fd), but the Unicode Standard stores it after the letter. The reph, the small र drawn above a letter, is typed after the letter (Z) but stored before it as र्. The tool moves both, turns a half letter plus the k stroke into a full letter, and reads joined letters such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध and द्य and nukta letters such as ज़, ड़ and फ़. Going the other way, it does the reverse and checks that the Kruti Dev text turns back into your text.

What this tool cannot do

It reads only the Kruti Dev 010 layout; Chanakya, DevLys and other legacy fonts may place letters on different keys. English words typed in an English font inside a Kruti Dev file come out as Hindi letters, because both are stored as the same English letters, so fix those by hand (web and email addresses are left alone). Kruti Dev uses one key for the colon and the visarga (the sign in दुःख), so the tool decides from the word and asks you to check. It does not translate, check spelling or fix typing mistakes in the original.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Hindi text turn into English letters when I copy it?

Because it was typed in Kruti Dev or another legacy font. The file holds English letters and symbols, and the font draws them as Hindi. Paste the text here to turn it into Unicode, which shows as Hindi in any font that has Devanagari letters.

Which Kruti Dev fonts does it work with?

It is built for the Kruti Dev 010 layout. If your text uses another font from the Kruti Dev family, convert one line first and compare it with the original. Chanakya, DevLys and other legacy fonts may place letters on different keys, so their text can come out wrong here.

Should I use Kruti Dev or Unicode on a website or social media?

Unicode. Kruti Dev text in a web page or a post is stored as English letters, so anyone without the font sees those letters, and programs that read the text, such as search engines and screen readers, get them too. Type new Hindi text in Unicode with a Hindi keyboard, such as Inscript, which the Department of Official Language asks government offices to use.

Why are some words marked to check?

A word is marked when, after converting, it starts with a vowel sign, has two vowel signs together or mixes Hindi and English letters. That usually means a typing mistake in the original, or a key your font uses differently. A % at the end of a word becomes a colon, or a visarga in words such as अतः and पुनः, so check those too.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, and your text and settings are saved only in this browser so they are there when you come back. Press Clear to remove the text. The tool does not use AI.
