How to use the Comparison Table Builder

Read what the guide says

This is the Comparison Table Builder.

Turn 2 to 6 plans or products into an accessible comparison table in HTML or Markdown, with checks.

Type the names of 2 to 6 plans,

products or services across the top and one feature per row,

or paste a table copied from Google Sheets or Excel.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Add a caption, pick a column to highlight with a short label,

choose how yes and no are shown, and add notes such as whether prices include GST.

Look at the preview and the checks, then copy the HTML into your page,

or the Markdown into an editor that takes it.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

Runs in your browser. Your table is saved only in this browser.

Your table

Put the products, services or plans across the top (2 to 6) and one feature per row. Write prices as plain numbers; ticks, crosses and y/n become words. You can paste cells copied from a spreadsheet straight into any box.

The grid needs JavaScript. Paste your table below instead.

Paste a whole table from a spreadsheet

The first row holds the column names and the first column the row labels. This replaces the grid.

Table options

Says what the table compares. It sits above the table.

Yes and no cells

Words are clearer than a tick or cross alone, and screen readers read them out.

Type a column name or a cell to start

A live preview, the HTML, Markdown and our checks appear here. The tool does not write any text: every word in the table is yours.

About the Comparison Table Builder

Type the plans, products or services you compare across the top and their features down the side, or paste the rows from a spreadsheet. You get a live preview, clean HTML with a caption, a header row and header cells marked up for screen readers, an optional style block that lets the table scroll sideways on phones, and a Markdown version. Ticks and crosses become Yes and No, prices are written in rupees with Indian digit grouping, and our checks point out empty cells, dashes, missing names and claims to prove. It runs in your browser and does not write any text: every word in the table is yours.

How it works

  1. 01

Type the names of 2 to 6 plans, products or services across the top and one feature per row, or paste a table copied from Google Sheets or Excel.

  2. 02

Add a caption, pick a column to highlight with a short label, choose how yes and no are shown, and add notes such as whether prices include GST.

  3. 03

Look at the preview and the checks, then copy the HTML into your page, or the Markdown into an editor that takes it.

How the HTML is built

The table gets a caption that says what it compares, the column names in a header row and the row labels in header cells, with scope="col" and scope="row" so each cell can be read with its row and column. This is the markup the W3C's tables tutorial describes for tables with two sets of headers. A tick or cross is shown next to the word Yes or No and hidden from screen readers, so the meaning never rests on a symbol. The optional style block adds borders, tints the highlighted column and puts the table in a box that scrolls sideways on narrow screens.

Comparing fairly

Google's guidance on writing reviews suggests covering comparable things to consider, or explaining which might be best for certain uses or circumstances, so the tool suggests a "Best for" row. If you compare yourself with other businesses, ASCI's code allows comparisons when what is compared is clearly stated and not chosen to give you an artificial advantage, and claims about facts should be capable of substantiation. A label such as "most popular" is that kind of claim.

What this tool cannot do

It does not check whether your prices and features are right or current, and it cannot look up a competitor's plans: it arranges what you type. It handles one header row and one column of row labels, up to 6 columns and 40 rows, with no merged cells. The checks are our own, not legal advice, and a good table does not mean a page will rank.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add the table to WordPress?

Copy the HTML and paste it into a Custom HTML block in the block editor. If your site removes style blocks, untick the style option and style the cmp-table class in your theme, or ask your developer to. Look at the page on a phone after publishing.

Why write Yes and No instead of ticks?

A tick or cross on its own is easy to miss or misread, and the word says the same thing to everyone. The tool writes the word, with the symbol beside it if you like; in the HTML the symbol is hidden from screen readers, so only the word is read out.

Can I paste a table from Google Sheets or Excel?

Yes. Select the cells, copy them and paste into any box in the grid, or into the paste box under it to replace the whole grid. Tabs, commas, semicolons and Markdown pipe tables are read. The first row should hold the column names and the first column the row labels; use "Swap rows and columns" if yours is the other way round.

How should I show prices?

Type plain numbers in a row whose label says price, cost or fee, and the tool writes them in rupees with Indian digit grouping, for example ₹1,50,000. Our suggestion: say whether prices include GST and any joining fee, and add the date you checked them, so readers know what they will pay.

Will a comparison table help my page rank?

We cannot promise that. A clear table helps readers choose, which is what Google's guidance on reviews asks for when it suggests covering comparable things to consider and explaining which might be best for certain uses. Write the rest of the page with real detail and first-hand experience too.
