How to use the Quality Score Checker

Read what the guide says

This is the Quality Score Checker.

Drop a keywords export to see Quality Score by spend,

each keyword's weakest part and how to fix it.

In Google Ads, open Keywords, select the columns icon and add Quality Score, Exp. CTR,

Ad relevance and Landing page exp. from the Quality score section,

then download the table as CSV.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Drop the file here or paste the table. The (hist.) columns work too, and title,

date and total rows are skipped.

Start with the ad groups under "Where to start", follow Google's advice for the weak part,

then download the CSV with a "what to fix" column for every keyword.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Or paste the table

Getting the export

  1. 1 In Google Ads, open Keywords from the Campaigns menu and pick a date range, such as the last 30 days.
  2. 2 Select the columns icon, open the Quality score section and add Quality Score, Exp. CTR, Ad relevance and Landing page exp. The (hist.) versions work too.
  3. 3 Keep Cost, Clicks and Conversions in the table, then download it as CSV and drop it here.

Quality Score is Google's 1 to 10 diagnostic for Search keywords. It is not used in the auction itself, so treat it as a pointer to what to fix in your ads and pages, not a target.

About the Quality Score Checker

Drop the keywords table you export from Google Ads with its Quality Score columns. See how scores spread across keywords and spend, a spend-weighted average (our measure), which of expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience is weak most often, and Google's advice for each. A worst-first table, an ad group summary and a CSV with a "what to fix" column show where to start. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Step 1

In Google Ads, open Keywords, select the columns icon and add Quality Score, Exp. CTR, Ad relevance and Landing page exp. from the Quality score section, then download the table as CSV.

  2. Step 2

Drop the file here or paste the table. The (hist.) columns work too, and title, date and total rows are skipped.

  3. Step 3

Start with the ad groups under "Where to start", follow Google's advice for the weak part, then download the CSV with a "what to fix" column for every keyword.

What Quality Score is

Google describes Quality Score as a diagnostic tool: a 1 to 10 rating for each keyword in a Search campaign, built from expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Each part is rated above average, average or below average against other advertisers whose ads showed for the exact same search over the last 90 days.

A pointer, not a target

Google says Quality Score is not an input in the ad auction and is not a key performance indicator. Real-time versions of its three parts are used in each auction instead. So use the score to find the part to fix, whether the ad, the keyword grouping or the landing page, and judge the result by conversions and cost per conversion.

What it cannot do

It only reads the scores in your export, so it cannot work out a score Google has not given, see the searches behind it or predict how your cost per click will change. The spend-weighted average and the 1 to 4, 5 to 6 and 7 to 10 bands are our measures. Keywords showing "—" have too little data for a score, and the tool explains why.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Quality Score in Google Ads?

Google does not set a target number, and it says Quality Score is a diagnostic, not a key performance indicator. A low score is a sign to look at its three parts: below average expected CTR, ad relevance or landing page experience tells you whether to work on the ad, the keyword grouping or the page. Judge changes by conversions and cost per conversion, not the score.

Why does my keyword show "—" instead of a Quality Score?

A dash means there is not enough data yet. New keywords start without a score, and a score needs searches that exactly match the keyword, so a keyword with plenty of impressions can still show "—" if few were exact matches. A keyword also needs recent exact match impressions to keep its score. If it gets almost no searches, Google suggests Keyword Planner to find better ones.

How do I improve ad relevance?

Google suggests matching the language of your ad text more closely to what people search for, and splitting ad groups that hold keywords one ad cannot answer into tighter groups, one theme per ad group. If braces and clear aligners share an ad group, give each its own ad group with ads that use its words, so every ad speaks to every keyword in its group.

How do I improve landing page experience?

Send each ad group to the page that shows exactly what was searched for, not your home page, and keep the offer and wording of the ad on the page. Google also lists making the page easy to use on a phone and improving loading speed. Conversion rate is a useful guide, although Google says it does not change the landing page status itself.

Will a higher Quality Score lower my cost per click?

This tool does not promise savings, because Quality Score itself is not used in the auction. Google uses real-time versions of expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience, together with your bid, when it works out Ad Rank. Fixing the weak part makes your ads more useful to searchers, so measure the effect in your own account by cost per click and cost per conversion.
