About the Google Ads Ad Copy Checker
Write up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions and watch the character counts, a mobile and desktop preview and our checklist update as you type. It flags duplicates, missing keywords, headlines that all say the same thing and text that may break Google's ad policies. Switch to Performance Max for long headlines, five descriptions and the business name, then copy the text or download a CSV for Google Ads Editor.
How it works
-
Step 1
Choose Responsive search ad or Performance Max, then enter your final URL, display paths, headlines and descriptions, or press Try an example.
-
Step 2
Watch the counters and our checklist as you type: limits, minimum counts, duplicates, keywords, variety, a call to action, an offer and policy flags.
-
Step 3
Shuffle the preview to see other combinations, fix what the checklist marks, then download the CSV for Google Ads Editor or copy the text.
The limits it checks
Responsive search ads take 3 to 15 headlines of up to 30 characters, 2 to 4 descriptions of up to 90 characters and two display paths of up to 15. Performance Max asset groups take 3 to 15 headlines, at least one of them 15 characters or fewer, 1 to 5 long headlines and 2 to 5 descriptions of up to 90 characters, and a business name of up to 25. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two.
Our checklist, not Ad Strength
The checklist is built from Google's published limits and tips, such as a keyword in at least two headlines and at least five headlines that say different things. It is our own guide. It is not Google's Ad Strength rating, and passing every check does not promise more clicks or cheaper ones.
What it cannot do
The preview is approximate: Google chooses which headlines and descriptions to show and may add assets such as sitelinks. Policy flags are a pre-check of the text only; Google also reviews your landing page, targeting and account. The tool does not connect to your Google Ads account, and your draft stays in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a Google Ads headline have?
A responsive search ad headline can have up to 30 characters and a description up to 90. Display paths allow 15 characters each. Performance Max uses the same 30-character headlines, plus long headlines and descriptions of up to 90 characters and a 25-character business name. In Chinese, Japanese and Korean each character counts as two, and the counters here allow for that.
How many headlines should a responsive search ad have?
Google requires at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions, and allows up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Its guidance suggests at least 8 to 10 headlines, with at least 5 that don't repeat the same or similar phrases, a keyword in at least 2 headlines and at least 3 headlines without keywords. More distinct headlines give Google more combinations to test.
Is this the same as Google's Ad Strength?
No. Ad Strength is Google's own rating inside Google Ads, and this tool does not reproduce it. Our checklist covers things you can act on straight away: limits, counts, duplicates, keyword use, variety, a call to action, an offer or number and policy risks. Use it to write a better first draft, then check Ad Strength and real results in your account.
How do I import the CSV into Google Ads Editor?
Download the CSV, open Google Ads Editor and choose Account, Import, From file. Editor shows each column header so you can check it before importing. You can also copy the tab-separated version and paste it with Make multiple changes in the Responsive search ads view. Fill in the campaign and ad group names first if you want Editor to place the ad for you.
Why does the checker flag phone numbers and capitals?
Google's editorial policies do not allow phone numbers in ad text, so add your number as a call asset instead. Words in capitals such as "FREE", repeated punctuation such as "!!" and decorative symbols may also be disapproved, although acronyms, coupon codes and brand names can be allowed. For line-by-line details and rewrites, use our Google Ads Policy Pre-check.
