About the Keyword Theme Grouper
Paste a keyword list or upload a Keyword Planner download, and get tightly themed ad groups with their search volume and intent. The tool merges plurals and word-order duplicates, splits groups by city, sets informational searches aside for content and flags words such as jobs, free and course as negatives. Move keywords between groups, then export a Google Ads Editor file or Performance Max search themes.
How it works
-
Step 1
Paste keywords one per line, with the monthly searches after a tab if you have them, or upload the CSV you downloaded from Keyword Planner.
-
Step 2
Select Group keywords. Rename any ad group and move keywords between groups, the content list and the negatives list.
-
Step 3
Choose the campaign name and match type, then download the CSV for Google Ads Editor, copy a group, or copy Performance Max search themes.
How the grouping works
Each keyword is lowercased, stripped of match type symbols and reduced to its main word, usually the last meaningful noun, so "dental implant cost in pune" sits with implants. Modifiers such as price, best, near me and city names are set aside. Plurals and word-order duplicates are merged, keeping the highest search volume so totals are not counted twice.
Commercial, informational and general keywords
Keywords with price, cost, best, cheap, buy, near me or a city name are marked commercial: people comparing or ready to choose. Keywords with how, what, why, meaning or side effects are informational and rarely turn into enquiries from an ad, so they go to a separate list for blog posts and guides. Keywords with no modifier are marked general.
What it cannot do
The grouping follows rules about words, not meaning, so it will not know that "RCT" means root canal treatment, or that two different words describe the same service. It does not fetch search volumes or predict what Google will match. Review the groups, move what is wrong, and check volumes and forecasts in Keyword Planner before you build the campaign.
Frequently asked questions
How do I group keywords into ad groups?
Put keywords together when one ad and one landing page can answer all of them. A practical rule is one service or product per ad group, with a separate group for each city if your ads name the city. This tool groups by the main word in each keyword and splits by city, and you can move anything it gets wrong before you export.
How many keywords should be in an ad group?
There is no magic number. What matters is that every keyword in the group suits the same ads and landing page, which might mean five keywords or thirty. If some keywords need a different headline, give them their own group. If a group gets almost no searches, merge it with its closest neighbour so it is not left with too little traffic to judge.
How many search themes can I add in Performance Max?
Google Ads lets you add up to 50 search themes per asset group. Search themes are optional signals that tell Performance Max which searches matter to you, on top of what it predicts from your assets and landing pages. Google advises against near-duplicates such as close synonyms, and your negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
Can I import the ad groups into Google Ads Editor?
Yes. Download the CSV for Google Ads Editor, which has Campaign, Ad group, Keyword and Criterion Type columns. In Editor, select Account › Import › From file, check the column headers and import. The rows arrive as proposed changes that you review and keep before posting. To add the groups to a campaign you already have, use its exact name.
Why are some keywords listed as negatives?
Keywords with words such as free, jobs, salary, course, college, pdf or meaning usually come from job seekers, students or researchers rather than buyers. The tool leaves them out of the ad groups and suggests the words as phrase match negatives. If a word is part of what you sell, such as course for a training institute, move those keywords back into a group.
