About the Meta Tag and Open Graph Generator

Fill in a short form and copy the tags for your page's <head>: the title, meta description, canonical link, robots rules, Open Graph tags for WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn, the X card, theme colour and viewport. As you type, see how the page could look in Google, WhatsApp, Facebook and X, with checks against Google Search Central, the Open Graph protocol and X's card docs. It runs in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Type the page title, the meta description and the page's full address, and choose whether Google may show the page.

  2. Step 2

Add the share image, its size and a short description of it, so link previews on WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and X show the picture you chose.

  3. Step 3

Copy the tags into the page's <head>, or into your SEO plugin's fields, then check the live page with the Link Preview Checker.

What Google does with these tags

Google's title link most often comes from the <title>, and Google sometimes uses the meta description for the snippet when it describes the page better than the page text. Neither has a length limit: Google cuts them to fit the screen, so the widths shown here are our measure. The canonical link is a strong hint about the address you prefer, and the robots tag only needs to list what changes Google's defaults of index and follow.

Tags for link previews

The Open Graph protocol lists og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url as required, and asks for og:image:alt with every image. X needs its own twitter:card tag and takes the title, description and image from the og: tags. Facebook recommends a share image of at least 1200 × 630 pixels, and WhatsApp asks for an absolute image address and a file under 600 KB.

What this tool cannot do

It builds tags from what you type and does not read your live page, so it cannot see tags your theme or SEO plugin already prints, which can leave a page with two titles or two canonicals. The previews are sketches: Google may rewrite titles and snippets, and each app draws and caches previews in its own way. Check the live page with the Link Preview Checker, and many pages at once with the Meta Tags Bulk Checker.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I paste these meta tags?

Inside the <head> of the page, before </head>. On WordPress, an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math has fields for the title, description, canonical and social tags, so use those instead of pasting code, or the page may end up with two of each. Shopify and Wix have their own SEO and social sharing settings for the same tags.

How long should a title and meta description be?

Google sets no limit for either: it cuts them to fit the device. By our measure, a title of about 580 pixels and a description of about 920 pixels show in full on a computer; the tool shows both widths as you type. Put the main words first, and write a different title and description for each page.

Does Google use the meta keywords tag?

No. Google Search does not use the keywords meta tag, so this tool does not make one. Use the words people search for in the title, headings and page text instead, without repeating them unnaturally.

Should I use noindex or robots.txt to hide a page?

Use noindex to keep a page out of Google's results, and let Google crawl the page so it can see the tag. Blocking a page in robots.txt stops crawling, not indexing: a blocked page can still appear in results if other pages link to it. To choose between copies of a page, use the canonical link, not noindex.

Why does WhatsApp show an old preview or no image?

Apps keep a copy of each preview, so a change can take time to show. WhatsApp asks for og:title, og:description and og:url in the page's head, an absolute image address and an image under 600 KB. For Facebook, upload the new image under a new file name, because Facebook caches images by their address, then refresh the page in its Sharing Debugger.
