For Facebook Instagram

How to use the Meta Ad Specs Checker

Read what the guide says

This is the Meta Ad Specs Checker.

Check ad images and videos for Feed, Stories, Reels and carousels,

with Stories and Reels safe zones.

Open one or more ad images or videos (JPG, PNG, MP4 or MOV),

or drop them on the box. Or try the example,

which draws four sample images at different sizes.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Choose the placements: Feed, Stories, Reels, right column,

Marketplace or carousel card. Add your ad text if you want it counted too.

Read each file's checks and fix what is marked "Fix" first. Look at the safe zone preview for Stories and Reels,

then copy the report or download it as a CSV for your designer.

It reads what your browser can see: size, shape, file size, type and length.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

About the Meta Ad Specs Checker

Open your ad images or videos and choose the placements you plan to use: Feed, Stories and Reels on Facebook and Instagram, the Facebook right column, Marketplace or a carousel. For each file and placement you get its size, shape, file size, type and length, marked ready, to improve or to fix against the Meta Ads Guide and Meta Business Help, with Stories and Reels safe zones drawn over a preview. Add your primary text, headline and description to count them against Meta's text recommendations. It runs in your browser, and your files are never uploaded.

Where the numbers come from

From the Meta Ads Guide and Meta Business Help. Feed images: JPG or PNG, 1.91:1 to 4:5, at least 600 pixels wide, up to 30 MB, with 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 recommended. Feed videos: up to 4 GB, 1 second to 241 minutes on Facebook and up to 60 minutes on Instagram. Stories: 9:16, images at least 600 × 1067. Reels images: 9:16 at 1440 × 2560, at least 500 pixels wide. Carousels: 2 to 10 cards, 1:1 recommended, at least 500 × 500. Where two Meta pages differ, the tool names both.

Safe zones and ad text

Meta suggests keeping text and logos out of about the top 14% and bottom 20% of a Stories ad, and the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% on each side of a Reels ad, because the profile icon and the call-to-action button can cover them. The tool shades those bands over your file. For ad text, the Ads Guide suggests 50 to 150 characters of primary text and a 27-character headline for Feed ads; for carousels, 125, 40 and 25 for the text, headline and link description. Text may be cut depending on placement and device.

What this tool cannot do

It reads what your browser can see: size, shape, file size, type and length. It cannot check video codecs, bitrate or sound, and it does not sign in to Ads Manager or upload anything. Meta gives no separate size limits for the right column and Marketplace and we found no Reels video limits, so the tool says where it uses the Feed limits as our suggestion. Meta updates its specs, and Ads Manager is the final check.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Facebook or Instagram feed ad image be?

The Meta Ads Guide recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 pixels for single-image Feed ads, and gives 1440 × 1440 for square 1:1 images. It allows shapes from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 4:5 (portrait), with a 3% tolerance, as JPG or PNG files of up to 30 MB and at least 600 pixels wide.

What size is a Stories or Reels ad?

Both are vertical 9:16. Meta's Stories ads design page recommends 1080 × 1920 with a minimum of 600 × 1067, and the Ads Guide now lists 1440 × 2560 for Stories and for Reels images. Reels images must be at least 500 pixels wide. Images can be up to 30 MB, and Stories videos up to 4 GB.

What is the safe zone in Stories and Reels ads?

It is the part of the frame Meta suggests keeping clear of text, logos and other key parts, because the profile icon and the call-to-action button sit on top. For Stories, keep about the top 14% and bottom 20% clear. For Reels, the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side. The tool shades those bands over your file.

How long can the primary text and headline be?

Meta allows more text than it recommends, but long text may be cut depending on placement and device. For Feed image and video ads, the Ads Guide suggests 50 to 150 characters of primary text and a headline of 27 characters. For carousel ads, Meta suggests 125 characters of text, a 40-character headline and a 25-character link description.

Are my images and videos uploaded?

No. The tool opens each file in your browser to read its size, shape and length, and draws the previews on your device. Nothing is sent to our server or to Meta, and closing the page clears them. It does not sign in to your Meta account.
