How to use the Local Landing Page Checker

Read what the guide says

This is the Local Landing Page Checker.

It checks a branch or area page for what nearby customers and search engines look for.

Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

This checker covers your page. Use it on each branch or area page.

Type your page and the area it's for, or press Try an example.

This one is a sample page for a made-up dental clinic in Kothrud.

Then press Check page.

You get a score out of a hundred, from our checklist.

The tiles show the markup type, tap to call, opening hours and a map.

This box lists what to fix first. The sample page is noindex on purpose.

Next, the page is short: our checklist looks for at least 300 words about this place.

This section checks what a nearby customer looks for first.

There's no map or directions link. If customers visit you, embed your map.

Open How to fix to see why it matters and the steps.

A thin page that only swaps the area name is what Google's spam policies call doorway pages.

Add what is specific to this branch: the team, photos, directions or prices.

Compare the name, address and phone found with your Business Profile.

And use this LocalBusiness markup to start from.

Fix the page, test the markup in Google's Rich Results Test, then check again.

You can also email yourself a PDF of the result.

A branch, service or area page. We read that one page as it is sent, without running scripts. The example is a sample page, so it is noindex on purpose.

About the Local Landing Page Checker

Enter a branch, service or area page, and the area it is for. We read the page and check what a nearby customer and a search engine look for: LocalBusiness markup with the properties Google requires and recommends, a phone number to tap, the address, opening hours, the area in the title, heading and text, a map or directions, and a way to get in touch. You also get the name, address and phone we found, to compare with your Business Profile, and markup to start from.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Enter the page address and, if you like, the area or city it is for.

  2. Step 2

We read the page once, as it is sent, and check it against our local page checklist and Google's LocalBusiness markup rules.

  3. Step 3

Fix what is flagged, compare the name, address and phone with your Business Profile, and test the markup with Google's Rich Results Test.

LocalBusiness markup

Google requires two properties, name and address, and recommends others such as telephone, url, geo, openingHoursSpecification and priceRange. It asks for the most specific type, such as Dentist or Plumber. Since 2019, review stars do not show for reviews a business publishes about itself, which Google calls self-serving reviews.

How local ranking works

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that your position in web results is also a factor. This checker covers your page. Distance depends on where the searcher is, and prominence on how well known your business is, from links, articles, directories and reviews.

What this tool cannot do

It reads one page and cannot see your Business Profile, so compare the name, address and phone yourself. It does not run scripts, so content added by JavaScript is missed. It cannot tell you your ranking, and the score is our checklist, not a Google measure.

Frequently asked questions

What should a local landing page include?

The business name, the full address and a phone number that can be tapped to call; opening hours; the area named in the title, main heading and text; a map or directions; a clear way to get in touch; and something specific to that place, such as the team, photos or local work. Add LocalBusiness markup with the same details as your Business Profile.

Which LocalBusiness properties are required?

Google requires name and address, with the address as a PostalAddress. It recommends telephone with the country code, url for the location's own page, geo with latitude and longitude to at least five decimal places, openingHoursSpecification and priceRange, plus menu and servesCuisine for food places. Use the most specific type, such as Dentist.

Does embedding a Google Map help local rankings?

Google has not said so. A map helps visitors find you, so it is worth adding on branch pages: in Google Maps, choose Share, then Embed a map, and paste the HTML into your page, with no API key needed. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

Why do my review stars not show in Google results?

Since 2019, Google does not show review stars for a business's reviews of itself, which it calls self-serving reviews, whether the markup is added by hand or comes from an embedded review widget. The markup does no harm, but it will not bring stars for your own business. Your Google reviews still show on your Business Profile.

Should the address on my website match my Business Profile?

Yes. Use the same name, address and phone number on the page, in its markup and on the Business Profile for that branch, so customers are never unsure which is right. Google asks for your real-world business name and a precise address on the profile, and a phone number that reaches that location as directly as possible.
