How to use the Social Media Profile Audit

Read what the guide says

This is the Social Media Profile Audit.

Tick through your Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X profiles,

with each platform's limits and a to-do list.

Open your profile in the app next to this page, and pick its tab here.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Tick each item that is done or does not apply, and paste your name,

username and bio to check their length.

Start with the do-these-first list,

then copy the to-do list or print the whole checklist for your team.

It is a checklist, not a connection to your accounts: it cannot see your profiles or tick anything for you.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

  • Free to use
  • Runs in your browser
  • No sign-up

Runs in your browser. It does not sign in to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or X, so open your profile next to this page and check each item there.

We count letters as you see them, so an emoji or a Hindi letter with its marks counts as one. The platforms do not say how they count a bio, so leave a little room.

Your profile, item by item

Tick an item when it is done or does not apply to you. Each item says whether its rule comes from the platform's help pages or from our checklist.

About the Social Media Profile Audit

Pick a platform: an Instagram professional account, a Facebook Page, a LinkedIn Page or an X profile. Each tab is a checklist of what a business profile needs, from the name, photo and bio to contact buttons, pinned posts, two-factor login and who has access. Each item gives the platform's own rule from its help pages, or says it is our checklist, and you can paste your name, username and bio to count them against the published limits. You get a score for each platform (our checklist) and a do-these-first list to copy or print. Ticks stay in your browser, and the tool never signs in to your accounts.

Limits and rules from each platform

An Instagram bio can be up to 150 characters, and you can pin up to 3 posts. An X bio can be up to 160 characters, a name up to 50 and a username up to 15. A LinkedIn Page can pin one post and feature up to three. Facebook Page names need normal capitalisation, with no symbols, extra punctuation or slogans. LinkedIn's own course on Pages gives 120 characters for the tagline and 2,000 for the overview.

Access and security first

On a Facebook Page, anyone with full control can remove other people and delete the Page, and if nobody has full control, Facebook deactivates the Page and schedules it for deletion. LinkedIn super admins can add and remove admins and deactivate the Page. Our checklist puts two-factor login and at least two trusted people with full access near the top, with agencies on partial or task access.

What this tool cannot do

It is a checklist, not a connection to your accounts: it cannot see your profiles or tick anything for you. The score is our measure of how much of our checklist you have done, not a rating from Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or X, and it does not predict reach or followers. The platforms do not say how they count characters in a bio, so we count letters as you see them. Menu names change from time to time, so a setting may sit somewhere slightly different in your app.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Instagram bio be?

Up to 150 characters, according to Instagram Help. Our checklist for a business bio: what you do, where, for whom, and one call to action, such as "Book on WhatsApp". Paste yours into the Instagram tab to count it; we count an emoji or a Hindi letter with its marks as one.

How many posts can I pin?

Instagram lets you pin up to 3 posts to the top of your profile. A LinkedIn Page admin can pin one post at a time and feature up to three in the Featured section. On a Facebook Page, admins and editors can pin a post, and on X a pinned post is the first one visitors see.

Should I give my agency full control of my Facebook Page?

Our suggestion: no. Full control gives the same access as the owner, including removing other people and deleting the Page. Keep full control with at least two people from your business, because a Page with nobody in full control is deactivated and scheduled for deletion, and give your agency partial or task access for posts, messages and ads.

Which two-factor method should I use?

Meta recommends an authentication app for Instagram and Facebook, and LinkedIn recommends an authenticator app too. On X, text message codes are only for X Premium subscribers, so use an authentication app or a security key. Keep your backup codes somewhere safe, away from your phone.

Does this tool connect to my accounts?

No. It never signs in to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or X and cannot see your profiles. You check each item in the app and tick it here. Your ticks and the text you paste are saved only in this browser, so you can come back to them, and nothing is uploaded.
