Instagram Grid Planner: preview your profile grid before you post

Put your next posts in order, pin up to three and see how your grid and its colours will look.

For Instagram

How to use the Instagram Grid Planner

Read what the guide says

This is the Instagram Grid Planner.

Put your next posts in order,

pin up to three and see how your grid and its colours will look.

Open your photos in the order you will post them, or drop them on the box.

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Drag tiles in the preview, or use the arrows in the list,

until the grid looks right. Pin up to three posts to keep them first,

and pick the tile shape your app shows.

Read the colour balance and the size checks,

then copy or download the posting order and post "Post 1" first.

It does not post, schedule or reorder anything on Instagram, and it never sees your account.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

Try it free on this page.

JPG, PNG or WebP, 3 to 30 of them, or drop them on this box. Open them in the order you will post them: the first becomes Post 1. Photos you open later are posted after those.

Runs in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded.

Tile shape in the preview

Instagram's help pages do not give the shape of profile grid tiles, so pick the one your app shows. We start with 4:5, the tallest photo shape Instagram Help lists.

Show each photo as

"Fill the tile" crops from the centre, as a grid tile does. "Whole photo" shows what gets cut.

Shown at the top of the preview and in the list you copy.

Open your photos to see your grid

Drag them into order, pin up to three, and check how each row looks together before you post.

Want one of our free tools on your own website?

Here's how to embed it, in about a minute.

Open any of our browser tools, such as the GST Calculator.

Below the tool, find Embed this tool on your website, and open it.

Press Copy code.

The code is a frame with the tool in it, plus a short credit line that links to the tool's page.

In your website's editor, add an HTML block where you want the tool, and paste the code.

In WordPress, that's the Custom HTML block.

If the tool needs more room, change the height in the code.

Publish the page, and the tool works on your site.

Here, it's on a sample page for a made-up sweet shop.

Visitors use it right there. It sets no cookies, and sends nothing they type to us.

The credit line under it links to the tool on DigitalSnot.

You can embed as many of our free browser tools as you like.

How it works

  1. Open your photos in the order you will post them, or drop them on the box. Add a few that are already on your profile and mark them "Already posted", so the new ones show above them.

  2. Drag tiles in the preview, or use the arrows in the list, until the grid looks right. Pin up to three posts to keep them first, and pick the tile shape your app shows.

  3. Read the colour balance and the size checks, then copy or download the posting order and post "Post 1" first.

About the Instagram Grid Planner

Open the photos you plan to post, 3 to 30 at a time, and see them as a profile grid with the newest at the top left. Drag them into the order you like, pin up to three, add photos already on your profile so you see the new ones above them, and check the average colour of each photo row by row. Each photo is checked against the sizes in Instagram Help, and you get a numbered posting order to copy. It runs in your browser: the photos are never uploaded, and the tool does not sign in to Instagram.

Why plan the grid

Your profile shows your posts side by side, so people who open it see them together. Laying out the next few posts first shows a row of three dark photos or two near-identical posts before they go live. Every new post moves each tile one place along, so a design that spans a row only stays together if you post in threes; the planner shows this for you.

Sizes from Instagram Help

Instagram Help supports photo shapes from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 4:5 (portrait), and crops other shapes to fit. Photos from 320 to 1080 pixels wide keep their size; wider ones are scaled down to 1080 and narrower ones are enlarged to 320. So 1080 × 1350, 1080 × 1080 and 1080 × 566 work well. Instagram lets you pin up to three posts to the top of your profile, and a carousel shows its first photo or video on the grid.

What this tool cannot do

It does not post, schedule or reorder anything on Instagram, and it never sees your account. Instagram's help pages do not give the shape of the profile grid's tiles, so you choose the shape for the preview; the app may crop a little differently from our preview, which fills each tile from the centre. The colour notes are our measure, not a rule. Photos are not saved: open them again next time.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Instagram grid photos be?

Instagram Help supports photo shapes from 1.91:1 to 4:5 at up to 1080 pixels wide, so use 1080 × 1350 (4:5) for portrait, 1080 × 1080 for square or 1080 × 566 for landscape. Photos in other shapes are cropped to fit. On the grid each post shows in a tile, which may cut its edges, so keep faces and text near the centre.

How many posts can I pin on Instagram?

Instagram Help says you can pin up to 3 posts you have shared to the top of your profile. In the planner, press Pin on up to three photos and they move to the first places in the preview, in the order you set.

What is the right shape for the grid preview?

Instagram's help pages do not publish the shape of profile grid tiles. Choose 4:5, 3:4 or square to match what your app shows on your own profile. Try "Whole photo" to see which parts of each photo the tile would cut.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the photos on your device and shows them with temporary links that only work on this page. Nothing is sent to our server or to Instagram, and the photos are gone when you close the page. Only your choice of tile shape, view and username is remembered in this browser.

Can it post to Instagram for me?

No. It does not sign in to Instagram or use its API, so it cannot post, schedule or move posts. Use it to decide the order, then post from the Instagram app, "Post 1" first. To plan which day each post goes out, use our Social Media Content Calendar.
