UTM parameters

Where the click came from. Use "google" for Google Ads.

The type of traffic. "cpc" is the usual value for paid search.

A readable campaign name in lower case. There is no ValueTrack parameter for the campaign name.

Optional. GA4 reads utm_id as the campaign ID.

Usually the keyword: {keyword} inserts it on each click.

Usually the ad: {creative} inserts the ad ID.

Other parameters (optional)
ValueTrack parameters

About the UTM and ValueTrack URL Builder

Enter your landing page, choose UTM values and pick ValueTrack parameters such as {keyword}, {campaignid} and {device}. You get a Final URL suffix for your account, campaign or ad group, a tracking template with {lpurl} and a sample click URL to test. Paste any existing URL to see what each parameter means and what is wrong with it.

    How it works

    1. Step 1

Enter your final URL and UTM values, starting from the google / cpc preset, and add ValueTrack parameters from the list.

    2. Step 2

Copy the Final URL suffix into your account, campaign or ad group settings, or the tracking template if you use a click tracker.

    3. Step 3

Open the sample click URL in the Redirect Checker to make sure your parameters and the gclid survive any redirects.

    Suffix or tracking template?

Google recommends the Final URL suffix for parameters that should reach your landing page: it is added to the end of the final URL on each click. A tracking template is for click trackers and must include {lpurl}. Set the suffix at account level, or at campaign or ad group level to override it there.

    Auto-tagging and UTM tags

Keep auto-tagging on: Google adds a gclid to each click, which Google Ads conversion tracking and GA4 use. When a click carries both a gclid and UTM tags, GA4 takes source, medium and campaign from auto-tagging and still records your utm_term and utm_content. UTM tags remain useful for CRMs and other analytics tools.

    What it cannot do

It does not connect to Google Ads or check your live campaigns, and the sample click URL uses made-up values. Some ValueTrack parameters only work on certain networks or campaign types, and {keyword} is empty for ads without keywords. Test real clicks in Google Ads and your analytics after you change tracking.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a final URL suffix in Google Ads?

A final URL suffix is a set of parameters, such as utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc, that Google adds to the end of your landing page address on each ad click. Enter it without a leading "?" or "&". You can set it for the whole account, a campaign or an ad group, and a lower level overrides the level above it.

What does {lpurl} mean in a tracking template?

{lpurl} is the ValueTrack parameter that inserts your final URL into a tracking template. Account, campaign and ad group tracking templates must include it, or a similar landing page parameter, or the link to your landing page breaks. Write {lpurl}? followed by your parameters; if the final URL already has a "?", Google uses "&" instead.

Which ValueTrack parameters should I use with UTM tags?

A common set is utm_term={keyword} for the keyword, utm_content={creative} for the ad and utm_id={campaignid} for the campaign ID, with plain text for the source, medium and campaign name, because there is no ValueTrack parameter for the campaign name. Add {matchtype}, {device} or {network} as extra parameters if you want them in your own reports.

Should I use UTM tags if auto-tagging is on?

You can use both. Keep auto-tagging on, because Google Ads conversion tracking and GA4 rely on the gclid it adds. In GA4, auto-tagged values are used for source, medium and campaign when a click has both, so UTM tags matter most for CRMs, form tools and other analytics. Use lower case, because GA4 treats UTM values as case-sensitive.

Why do my UTM parameters or gclid disappear?

Usually a redirect drops them, for example from http to https, from a short link or from a page that has moved. If the landing page redirects without passing the parameters on, the click cannot be linked to a conversion. Test the sample click URL with our Redirect Checker, and ask your developer to keep query parameters on every redirect.
