Read what the guide says

This is the YouTube Video SEO Checker.

Check a video's title, description, tags, hashtags and chapters against YouTube's limits and rules.

Paste your video's title, description and tags,

and add the main search phrase if you have one.

Paste the title, description and tags you plan to use, or click "Try an example".

Or press Try an example to fill in sample details.

Add the search phrase the video is about and, for chapters, the video's length.

Fix what is flagged, then copy your text back into YouTube Studio.

It checks your text against YouTube's published rules and our checklist; it cannot see how YouTube ranks your video.

It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

About the YouTube Video SEO Checker

Paste your video's title, description and tags, and add the main search phrase if you have one. The checker counts characters against YouTube's limits, finds angled brackets YouTube does not allow, checks your hashtags against the 60-hashtag rule, counts tags the way YouTube does, and reads your chapter timestamps to see whether YouTube will show them. It updates as you type, in your browser.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Paste the title, description and tags you plan to use, or click "Try an example".

  2. Step 2

Add the search phrase the video is about and, for chapters, the video's length.

  3. Step 3

Fix what is flagged, then copy your text back into YouTube Studio.

YouTube's limits and rules

YouTube allows titles of up to 100 characters and descriptions of up to 5,000, and does not allow angled brackets (< or >) in either. If a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them; up to three hashtags from the description, the ones YouTube considers most engaging, appear by the title. YouTube's developer documentation limits tags to 500 characters in total.

Chapters

YouTube shows chapters when the description lists at least three timestamps in ascending order, the first at 00:00, and every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Your own chapters replace the automatic chapters YouTube can add, which you can switch off in YouTube Studio.

What this tool cannot do

It checks your text against YouTube's published rules and our checklist; it cannot see how YouTube ranks your video. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery compared with the title, thumbnail and description, so write the title and description for viewers first.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a YouTube title be?

Up to 100 characters, and it cannot contain angled brackets (< or >). Put the words that matter most, such as what the video shows and where, at the start. The checker counts characters as you type and flags anything over the limit.

How many hashtags should a YouTube video have?

YouTube sets no minimum, but if a video has more than 60 hashtags it ignores all of them, and its hashtag policy says the more you add, the less relevant they become. Up to three hashtags from the description, the ones YouTube considers most engaging, appear by the title, so a few relevant ones are enough.

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?

YouTube needs at least three timestamps in ascending order in the description, the first one at 00:00, and every chapter at least 10 seconds long. Put each timestamp at the start of its own line. Paste your description into the checker to see which rule is not met.

Do YouTube tags still matter?

Less than most people think. YouTube says tags can help when your video's topic is often misspelled, but otherwise play a minimal role in discovery; the title, thumbnail and description matter more. Its developer documentation limits tags to 500 characters in total, counting the commas between them.

Where should the main keyword go?

In the title, said the way viewers would search for it, and near the start of the description, where you explain what the video is about. That is our checklist, not a YouTube rule: YouTube does not publish how it ranks videos, and its policies treat excessive tags in a description as spam.
