About the Video Schema and Sitemap Generator

Embedded a YouTube video on a service page or blog post? Paste the video link, the page address and the video's details, and get VideoObject structured data (JSON-LD) for the page, a video sitemap entry and a complete sitemap file. The tool fills in the player URL and a thumbnail from the video ID, writes the length the way Google reads it, and checks the required fields, dates, links and thumbnail format. It runs in your browser and never signs in to YouTube or uses its API.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Paste the YouTube link or video ID and the address of the page where the video is embedded, or click "Try an example".

  2. Step 2

Add the title, description, upload date and time, length, thumbnail and channel name.

  3. Step 3

Copy the JSON-LD into the page's HTML and the entry into your sitemap, then test the page with our Schema Validator.

What Google needs

Google's video structured data needs three properties: name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate, the date and time the video was first published in ISO 8601 format, ideally with a timezone offset. Description, duration and embedUrl, the player URL, are recommended. A video sitemap entry needs a thumbnail, title, description of up to 2,048 characters, and a player or content URL that is not the same as the page address.

When Google shows the video

Google shows a video thumbnail beside a result, and lists a page in video results, only when the video is the main content of the page. When a site embeds a YouTube video, Google may index it both on that page and on YouTube. For YouTube videos, Google may show key moments based on the video's description on YouTube, so add chapters there.

What this tool cannot do

It does not open your page, the video or the thumbnail, so it cannot check that the video is the main content, that the image exists or that Googlebot can fetch it. It does not make Clip or SeekToAction markup, because for YouTube videos key moments come from the YouTube description. Markup does not guarantee that Google shows a video result.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need video schema if my video is on YouTube?

If you embed the video on your own page, structured data describes it on that page. Google says that when a website embeds videos from platforms such as YouTube, it may index the video both on the web page and on the platform's own page. Google shows video features for a page only when the video is its main content.

Which VideoObject properties are required?

Three: name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate. Google recommends description, duration, contentUrl or embedUrl, and expires if the video stops being available. In September 2026 Google added creator, for the person or organisation that made the video; it needs a name.

What should embedUrl be for a YouTube video?

Google describes embedUrl as the URL of the player, usually the iframe src. For a YouTube embed, that is the address in your iframe: https://www.youtube.com/embed/ followed by the 11-character video ID, or the youtube-nocookie.com address if you use privacy-enhanced mode. Copy it from your page to be sure.

How do I get key moments for an embedded YouTube video?

Add chapters to the video's description on YouTube. Google says Google Search may automatically enable key moments for YouTube videos based on that description, so this tool does not make Clip or SeekToAction markup. YouTube chapters need at least three timestamps in ascending order, the first at 00:00, each at least 10 seconds long.

What goes in a video sitemap entry?

The page address in loc, then a video:video block with the thumbnail, title, description of up to 2,048 characters, and the player or content URL, which must not be the same as the page address. Duration (1 to 28,800 seconds) and an expiry date are recommended; view count, publication date and uploader are optional.
