About the AI Max Search Terms Analyzer
Upload the AI Max view of your search terms report ("Search terms and ad combinations") and, if you have it, the search terms report with its Match type column. See how spend and conversions split between AI Max searches and your keywords, the new searches that convert (keyword ideas), the searches that waste money (negative keyword ideas), the landing pages AI Max chose with our flags for pages that look wrong for ads, and the headlines it showed. Copy or download each list. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
-
Step 1
In Google Ads, open Campaigns › Insights and reports › Search terms and download the table with the Match type and Source columns. Then choose "Search terms and ad combinations" from the drop-down above the table and download that view too.
-
Step 2
Drop one or both files here, or paste the tables. Add your brand names, your target CPA or ROAS and your keywords, so the tool can tell new searches from ones you already cover.
-
Step 3
Start with the "do these first" list, untick anything you disagree with, then copy the negatives, keywords and URL exclusions or download them as CSV files.
What the AI Max report shows
AI Max for Search reaches searches beyond your keywords, using broad match and keywordless technology, and with final URL expansion it can send people to a page on your site that fits their search better, with a headline written to match. Google's "Search terms and ad combinations" view, formerly "Search terms and landing pages from AI Max", lists each search with the headlines, landing pages, campaign and ad group behind it. In the search terms report, AI Max searches show "AI Max" in the Match type column.
How the tool judges searches and pages
A search counts as new when it does not contain every word of one of your keywords, with plurals merged (our measure). New searches that convert become keyword ideas. Searches with spend and no conversions become negative ideas, and a word is never suggested if it appears in a search that converted, in one of your keywords or in a brand search. Pages are flagged by our checklist: careers, policy and account pages, blog, contact and home pages, and pages that spend without results.
What this tool cannot do
Google leaves out searches with too little activity, for privacy, so the reports add up to less than your campaign totals. Google also says not to add the AI Max view and the search terms report together, so the tool uses each for its own part. It cannot see your campaign settings or judge whether a search suits your business, only whether it converted, and it never signs in to Google Ads.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the AI Max search terms report?
In Google Ads, open Campaigns, then Insights and reports › Search terms. Above the table, open the Search terms drop-down and choose "Search terms and ad combinations", which Google used to call "Search terms and landing pages from AI Max". For the split between AI Max and your keywords, also download the standard view with the Match type column and the Source column added.
Why do the numbers not match my campaign totals?
Google leaves out search terms with too little activity, to protect people's privacy. Their clicks and cost still count in the campaign totals, but not in the search terms reports. Google also notes that filtering the Match type column for AI Max can show lower numbers. Use the reports to find patterns, and the campaign totals for spend.
Can I add the two AI Max reports together?
No. Google says many searches appear in both the search terms report and the AI Max view, because they are two views of the same traffic, so their numbers must not be added. This tool takes the split between AI Max and your keywords, the keyword ideas and the negatives from one report, and the landing pages and headlines from the AI Max view.
How do I stop AI Max sending people to the wrong page?
Add URL exclusions. They are a campaign-level control in the AI Max settings: open the campaign settings, then AI Max › Final URL expansion, and add the pages on the URLs tab or a rule on the Rules tab. They work only while text customization and final URL expansion are on. In the AI Max view you can also tick a landing page and choose "Add as negative URL".
When should I add negative keywords for AI Max?
Google suggests waiting at least two weeks after you turn AI Max on before making changes such as adding negative keywords. After that, our suggestion is to check the report every week for the first month. Add negatives for searches that never fit your business, and make sure none of them blocks a search that converts or one of your keywords.
