About the YouTube Made for Kids and AI Disclosure Helper
Answer short yes or no questions about one video. The made for kids part uses the factors YouTube lists, such as the subject, who the video is for, child actors, characters and toys, and songs for children, and suggests a setting. The AI part checks what you made or changed with AI against YouTube's examples and says whether a disclosure is needed. Each answer shows where to set it in YouTube Studio and what changes. It runs in your browser and never signs in to YouTube.
How it works
-
Step 1
Pick a tab: made for kids, or AI disclosure.
-
Step 2
Answer the questions for one video, or click "Try an example".
-
Step 3
Read the suggestion and the reasons, then make the choice yourself in YouTube Studio.
Made for kids is your choice and your responsibility
YouTube asks every creator to say whether a channel or video is made for kids, to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and other laws. Its factors include the subject, whether children are the intended or actual audience, child actors or models, characters, celebrities or toys popular with children, language meant for children, activities such as play-acting, simple songs or games and early education, and songs, stories or poems for children. Having some of these factors does not by itself make a video made for kids. Videos made for kids lose features such as comments, notifications, end screens, cards, personalised ads, the Miniplayer and saving to a playlist.
When YouTube asks for an AI disclosure
YouTube asks you to disclose realistic content made or meaningfully changed with AI or other tools: a real person appearing to say or do something they did not, altered footage of a real event or place, a realistic scene that did not happen, or AI music that is the main focus. Clearly unrealistic content, beauty filters, colour and lighting filters, special effects, and AI used for scripts, ideas, titles or captions do not need it. YouTube can also add a label itself, and creators who keep failing to disclose may have content removed or be suspended from the YouTube Partner Program.
What this tool cannot do
It cannot see your video or your channel, and it is not legal advice. Its suggestion is our measure of your answers against YouTube's factors and examples, and you make the final choice. YouTube may change a made for kids setting in cases of error or abuse, and it changes YouTube Studio from time to time, so a menu name may differ.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to set made for kids on every YouTube video?
Yes. YouTube asks every creator to say whether their channel or videos are made for kids, to comply with COPPA and other laws. You can set the whole channel in YouTube Studio under Settings, Channel, Advanced settings, Audience, or set each video; a video's own setting overrides the channel setting.
What turns off when a video is made for kids?
YouTube lists autoplay on home, cards and end screens, the channel branding watermark, channel memberships, comments, the donate button, live chat, merchandise and ticketing, notifications, personalised ads, the Miniplayer, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and saving to a playlist or Watch Later. A channel set as made for kids also has no channel memberships, notification bell, Posts or Ask Studio.
Is a family-friendly video made for kids?
Not by itself. YouTube says a video is not made for kids just because it is safe for everyone to watch, and that having some of its factors does not automatically make it made for kids. What matters is whether the video is aimed at children. Our suggestion: a clinic's video for parents, such as how to choose a child's toothbrush, is usually aimed at adults.
Do I need to disclose an AI voice-over on YouTube?
YouTube's examples include synthetically generating a person's voice to narrate a video, and making a real person appear to say something they did not, so a cloned voice of a real person needs a disclosure. AI used only for the script or captions does not. For a generic AI voice that copies no one, the YouTube pages we checked give no example; our suggestion is to disclose it if viewers could take it for a real person speaking.
What happens if I do not disclose AI content?
YouTube may add a label itself, including labels you cannot remove, and from May 2026 it labels videos where its systems detect significant photorealistic AI use and the creator has not answered. Creators who consistently choose not to disclose may face penalties, including removal of content or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program.
