About the Performance Max Channel Analyzer
Upload or paste the channel distribution table from the Performance Max channel performance report in Google Ads. The tool first compares the campaign with its target ROAS or cost per conversion, then shows each channel's share of cost, conversions and conversion value, its own ROAS and cost per conversion, the status Google gives each channel, and how the mix changed over time when your file is split by day, week or month. Google's advice on reading the report sits next to our suggestions, which are labelled. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How it works
-
Step 1
In Google Ads, open your Performance Max campaign and go to Insights and reports › Channel performance. Switch on the Cost toggle, add conversion columns and select Download on the channel distribution table.
-
Step 2
Drop the file here or paste the table, and add your target ROAS or target cost per conversion. Pick a campaign if the file has more than one.
-
Step 3
Check the campaign against its goal first, fix any channel that is not eligible or missing assets, then read the channels and copy the summary or download the CSV.
What the channel performance report shows
Google's channel performance report for Performance Max has a performance summary, a channels-to-goals chart and a channel distribution table. The table covers Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps and Search partners, with metrics such as impressions, interactions, conversions, conversion value and cost (shown when you switch on the Cost toggle). Its Status column flags channels that are not eligible, limited, or missing required assets.
How to read it
Google asks you to judge the campaign on its overall goal, not on single channels. Channel averages can mislead: Performance Max spends where the next rupee is expected to earn most, conversions can arrive days later, and last-click attribution can hide a channel that helps others. The tool therefore puts the campaign result first, and marks its own flags, such as a channel taking 10% or more of the cost with less than half that share of results, as our measure.
What this tool cannot do
It reads only the file you give it, so it cannot see your assets, bids, audiences or the hover details behind a status. It cannot tell which conversions a channel caused, only which the report credits to it. Column names in downloads can differ; the tool accepts the common ones. It never signs in to Google Ads.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the channel performance report in Google Ads?
Open Campaigns, choose your Performance Max campaign, then Insights and reports › Channel performance. The report has a summary, a chart and a channel distribution table. Select Download on the table toolbar to save the table, and switch on the Cost toggle first so each channel's cost is included.
Why is Performance Max spending on YouTube or Display when Search has a better ROAS?
Performance Max bids for the best return on the next rupee, not the best average. A channel with a lower average ROAS can still be the cheapest place for the next conversion, and some channels help conversions that are credited elsewhere. Google's advice is to judge the campaign against its target first. If YouTube takes a large share, Google suggests checking engaged-view conversions.
What does "Not eligible" or "Eligible (Limited)" mean for a channel?
They are statuses in the report's Status column. Not eligible means ads cannot show on that channel; Eligible (Limited) means issues limit where and when ads can show. A common cause is missing required assets, such as a location asset for Maps or a square image for Display. Hover over the status in Google Ads to see what to fix.
Can I stop Performance Max spending on a channel?
Google is rolling out channel prioritisation from October 2026. In Performance Max, Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover are grouped as Google channels, while Search partners and the Display Network can each be set to Low priority with an optional daily cap. Google says that with Target CPA or Target ROAS and no budget limit it generally does not change spend.
Should I use the placement report to judge channels?
No. Google says the Performance Max placement report does not cover all campaign performance and should only be used for brand safety concerns, such as finding sites or apps you do not want your ads on. Use the channel performance report and other campaign reports to judge results.
