Challan

Why are the goods moving?

You send goods to a job worker to process and send back (Rule 55; the challan under Rule 45). Sending goods for job work is not a supply in itself (CBIC Circular 38/12/2018-GST).

Up to 16 characters (Rule 55), such as DC/26-27/001. Kept in this browser.

Sets the time limit shown in the checks: one year for inputs, three years for capital goods (CGST Act, section 143).

Rule 55: for a supply of goods, in triplicate, marked original for consignee, duplicate for transporter and triplicate for consigner.

Your business (consigner)

Fills in from the GSTIN's first two digits.

PNG, JPEG or WebP. Kept in this browser only.

Consignee (goods go to)

Leave it empty if the consignee is not registered.

Rule 55 asks for it when goods move between States. Ask your CA when unsure.

Transport (optional)

Made on the e-way bill portal, not here. The checks say when rule 138 may need one.

Goods

The taxable value is quantity × value per unit. GST shows only when you tick that the movement is a supply; the rate list has the main GST rates since 22 September 2025 (5%, 18% and a special 40%) and 0%.

Note

Your business details, logo, signatory, copies and purpose are kept in this browser.

Selling the goods? Make a tax invoice with the GST Invoice Generator. For the tax on a price, use the GST Calculator, and to check an invoice you received, the GST Invoice Checker.

About the Delivery Challan Generator

Fill in your business, the consignee and the goods, and get a clean A4 delivery challan for goods you move without a tax invoice: for job work, on approval, for a reason other than a supply, liquid gas whose quantity is not known, or one supply sent in lots. The tool prints the three copies Rule 55 of the CGST Rules marks, adds CGST and SGST or IGST when the movement is a supply, writes the value in words, and checks the details the rule lists. It runs in your browser: your business details and challan numbers stay in this browser, and consignee details are not saved.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Pick why the goods are moving, then fill in your business details once: name, address, GSTIN, State and logo. They are kept in this browser for next time.

  2. Step 2

Add the consignee, the transporter and vehicle if you know them, and each item with its HSN code, quantity, unit and value. Tick the GST box if the movement is a supply to the consignee.

  3. Step 3

Fix anything the checks flag, choose Print or save as PDF to get the three marked copies, then start the next challan to move to the next number.

When a delivery challan is used

Rule 55 of the CGST Rules lets you move goods on a delivery challan instead of a tax invoice when you supply liquid gas whose quantity is not known when it leaves, send goods for job work, move goods for a reason other than a supply, or in other cases the Board notifies. CBIC Circular 10/10/2017-GST lets goods sent on approval move on a challan too, with the tax invoice issued once the sale takes place. For a supply sent in semi knocked down or completely knocked down condition, or in batches or lots, the full invoice is issued before the first lot leaves, and each later lot travels on a challan that refers to it, with a certified copy of the invoice; the original invoice goes with the last lot.

What the challan shows, and its copies

Rule 55 lists nine details: the challan's date and number; your name, address and GSTIN if registered; the consignee's name, address and GSTIN or UIN if registered; the HSN code and description of the goods; the quantity (provisional where the exact quantity is not known); the taxable value; the tax rate and amount where the goods move for a supply to the consignee; the place of supply for movement between States; and a signature. The number is a serial number of up to 16 characters, in one or more series. For a supply of goods the challan is made in triplicate, marked original for consignee, duplicate for transporter and triplicate for consigner. Where goods move for a supply but the invoice could not be issued when they left, the tax invoice is issued after delivery.

What this tool cannot do

It does not make e-way bills. Rule 55 says goods moving on a challan are declared as rule 138 asks, and rule 138 asks for an e-way bill when a registered person moves goods worth over ₹50,000, tax included (some goods are left out), and for goods sent to a job worker in another State whatever the value. Make it on the e-way bill portal and type its number on the challan. The tool does not keep a record of your challans, track goods at a job worker, calculate cess, or tell you which HSN code or GST rate applies or whether a movement counts as a supply. It is not tax advice: check with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need a delivery challan instead of a tax invoice?

Rule 55 of the CGST Rules allows a delivery challan when you send goods for job work, move goods for a reason other than a supply, or supply liquid gas whose exact quantity is not known when it leaves, and in other cases the Board notifies. CBIC also lets goods sent on approval move on a challan. For a normal sale, issue a tax invoice instead.

How many copies of a delivery challan are needed?

For a supply of goods, Rule 55 asks for three copies: the original marked for the consignee, the duplicate for the transporter and the triplicate for the consigner. CBIC Circular 38/12/2018-GST also has the principal prepare a job work challan in triplicate. The tool prints all three, one per page.

Does a delivery challan show GST?

Rule 55 asks for the tax rate and amount only where the goods move for a supply to the consignee, for example liquid gas or a supply sent in lots. A challan for job work, or for goods that are not being supplied, shows the taxable value without tax. Tick the GST box in the tool when the movement is a supply.

What is the time limit for goods sent for job work?

Under section 143 of the CGST Act, inputs sent for job work are brought back, or supplied from the job worker's place, within one year, and capital goods within three years (moulds, dies, jigs, fixtures and tools are outside the three-year limit). Otherwise they count as supplied by you on the day you sent them. The Commissioner can extend these limits. The tool shows the date for each job work challan.

Do I need an e-way bill with a delivery challan?

Often, yes. Rule 55 says goods moving on a challan are declared as the e-way bill rule (rule 138) asks. An e-way bill is needed when a registered person moves goods worth over ₹50,000, tax included, with some goods left out, and for goods sent to a job worker in another State whatever the value. This tool does not make e-way bills; it prints the e-way bill number if you type it.
