About the Google Rating Calculator

Enter your Google rating, your number of reviews and the rating you want. You see how many 5-star reviews it takes to get there, what one new review of each star does to your average, how many 5-star reviews make up for one 1-star review, and a table of common targets with the time each takes at your pace. If you know how many reviews you have at each star, enter them for the exact average. It is simple maths in your browser: it does not sign in to Google or read your profile, and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Enter your current rating and number of reviews from your Business Profile.

  2. Step 2

Pick a target, and lower the average of new reviews if not all of them will be 5 stars.

  3. Step 3

Read the number you need, then ask every customer for an honest review with your review link.

How Google works out your rating

Google says the review score on your Business Profile is the average of all ratings published on Google for your business, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, and that after a new review it can take up to 2 weeks for the score to update. This tool works out the same kind of average from the numbers you type.

Why one bad review matters less as you grow

Each new review moves the average by less when you already have many. One 1-star review takes a 4.3 average from 86 reviews down to about 4.26. To make up for it you need 5 new 5-star reviews, and that number depends only on your average, not on how many reviews you have. Asking every customer, every week, is what moves the rating.

What this tool cannot do

It cannot see your profile, so it works only from what you type. A score copied from your profile may be rounded, so the real count can differ by a few reviews; your count at each star gives the exact figure. It cannot tell you how many reviews you will get, and it says nothing about ranking. It never suggests buying or rewarding reviews, which Google's policies forbid.

Frequently asked questions

How many 5-star reviews do I need to get a 4.5 rating?

It depends on where you start. The sum is: reviews needed = (target − current average) × number of reviews ÷ (5 − target), rounded up. For a 4.3 average from 86 reviews, that is 0.2 × 86 ÷ 0.5 = 34.4, so 35 five-star reviews. Enter your own numbers above to see yours.

Can my rating ever reach 5.0?

Only if every review is 5 stars. Once any review is lower, each new 5-star review brings the average closer to 5.0 but never all the way. A target such as 4.8 or 4.9 can be reached; the calculator shows how many reviews each one takes.

Why has my rating not changed after a new review?

Google says it can take up to 2 weeks for the review score to update after someone leaves a review. Also, one review moves a large average only a little: with 200 reviews at 4.5, a new 5-star review lifts the exact average by less than 0.01, so the figure you see may stay the same.

Can I offer a discount or gift for a 5-star review?

No. Google's policies do not allow payment, discounts, gifts or free services in return for reviews, or for changing or removing one, and they do not allow asking only happy customers. Reviews from owners and staff are removed. You can ask every customer for an honest review and share your review link or QR code.

Can I get a 1-star review removed to raise my rating?

Only if it breaks Google's policies, for example fake engagement or a conflict of interest. Google does not remove a review just because it is negative. Reply calmly and fix what you can, with help from the Review Reply Templates, and keep asking every customer for a review.
