About the XML Sitemap Generator
Paste your page addresses, one per line, or open a crawl export (CSV) and pick its URL, last-modified and image columns. The tool cleans the list and writes a sitemap that follows the sitemaps protocol and Google's guidelines: full URLs on one host and protocol, each listed once, without # parts, session IDs or tracking codes, with non-ASCII letters percent-encoded and lastmod dates written as YYYY-MM-DD. Above 50,000 URLs or 50 MB it splits the list into several files and adds a sitemap index. You get the files to download, the Sitemap line for robots.txt and a list of every URL left out and why. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
How it works
-
Step 1
Enter your site address, then paste your URLs or open a CSV or text file from a crawler or your CMS.
-
Step 2
If it is a table, check the URL, last-modified and image columns the tool picked, and choose what to include.
-
Step 3
Download the sitemap, upload it to your site's root folder, add the Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Search Console.
What goes in the file
Each URL goes in a loc tag as a full address that starts with http or https and is under 2,048 characters, with & ' " < > written as XML entities in a UTF-8 file, as the sitemaps protocol asks. A lastmod date is added only when your list has one, because Google uses lastmod only when it is consistently and verifiably accurate. priority and changefreq are left out, since Google ignores them. Image entries carry only image:loc: Google retired the other image tags in 2022.
Which URLs are left out
A sitemap can list only URLs on its own host and protocol, so URLs on another domain or subdomain, or on http when the site is on https, are left out, as are mailto: and other links. Google advises against URLs with session IDs or tracking codes, so the tool leaves those out too (our checklist), and it removes # parts, since Google treats /page#a and /page#b as the same page. Repeats are merged. Every URL left out is listed with the reason and can be downloaded as a CSV.
What this tool cannot do
It does not crawl your site, so it knows only the URLs you give it. It cannot tell whether a page redirects, returns an error, is noindex or has a canonical link to another address: run the Sitemap Validator on the live sitemap for that. It reads up to 200,000 lines in one run, a limit we set for browser memory, and it does not write video or news sitemap entries.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need this if my website already makes a sitemap?
Usually not. Shopify makes sitemap.xml for you, and WordPress has its own sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xml. Use this tool for a hand-built or custom site, a site whose sitemap is missing pages, or a list of pages from a crawl that you want to submit.
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed in one file. Above that, the tool splits the list into sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml and so on, and writes a sitemap index that lists them. An index can list up to 50,000 sitemaps. Upload all the files to the same folder and submit the index in Search Console.
Should I add lastmod, priority and changefreq?
Add lastmod only if your list has the real date each page's main content last changed: Google uses it when it is consistently and verifiably accurate, and asks you not to set it to the time the sitemap was made. The tool never fills in today's date. Google ignores priority and changefreq, so the tool leaves them out.
Where do I put the sitemap?
Upload it to your site's root folder, so it opens at an address such as https://smilestudio.example/sitemap.xml. A sitemap can list only URLs in its own folder and below, so the root covers the whole site. Then add the Sitemap line the tool gives you to robots.txt, and submit the address in Search Console under Indexing, then Sitemaps.
Why were some of my URLs left out?
Each one is listed under the checks with the reason: another host or protocol (www and non-www count as different hosts), a session ID or tracking code, a line that is not a web address, or a path such as /about when no site address was given. Fix the list, or put those URLs in a sitemap on their own host.
